When a vessel or offshore installation needs a high-performance computer for edge processing, navigation-related equipment, onboard networks, and marine automation, a conventional desktop PC may not provide enough industrial interfaces or environmental protection. A marine edge computer is more useful when the buyer needs multiple Ethernet ports, NMEA communication, serial interfaces, isolated I/O, flexible storage, and a wide DC input in one system.
IEI MCS-DB001, Intel Core i7-1365URE, Marine Edge Computer
The IEI MCS-DB001 is a marine edge computer built around the Intel® Core™ i7-1365URE processor and two DDR5 5600 Mbps SO-DIMM slots. It is designed for onboard computing where applications need more processing capability while also requiring direct communication with marine equipment, network devices, and other connected systems.
The system provides flexible storage through two 2.5" hard drive SSD bays and an M.2 2280 socket for PCIe 4.0 NVMe / SSD storage. An M.2 M-Key 2242/2280 PCIe 4.0x4 NVMe interface is also provided with a 256GB SSD pre-installed. This gives the computer a practical storage platform for operating systems, applications, and onboard data.
Connectivity is a major part of the MCS-DB001. It provides four RJ-45 Ethernet ports, including two Intel® I226V 2.5 GbE and two Realtek RTL8125B 2.5 GbE ports. It also includes four NMEA0183 interfaces, two configurable DB9 serial ports, eight isolated digital I/O, four USB3.0 ports, and two USB2.0 ports, allowing it to connect with a wide range of marine and industrial equipment.
The computer also supports expansion for wireless, cellular, and GNSS functions through M.2 and Mini PCIe slots. Two DP++ outputs support up to 4K each, while Mic in and line out provide audio connectivity. With AT/ATX power mode, remote power on/off, and a 9V to 36V DC input, the system is designed to integrate into DC-powered onboard installations.
For marine environments, the MCS-DB001 supports an operating temperature of -20°C to 60°C with SSD airflow and a storage temperature of -40°C to 80°C. It also provides 5G operating shock, MIL-STD-810H 514.6C-1 vibration with SSD, and CE/FCC/IEC 60945/61162-1/2, IACS E10/RoHS certification. Windows 11 and Ubuntu 22.04 support provide flexibility for different marine edge computing applications.
