When an industrial network grows beyond a few Ethernet devices, a small switch can quickly become restrictive, especially when both standard Gigabit connections and higher-speed fiber uplinks are needed. The Siemens SCALANCE XC416-8 is designed for larger industrial network segments, combining 24 integrated connections with Layer 3 managed networking, redundant power input, and flexible mounting options.

The SCALANCE XC416-8 is a Layer 3 managed Industrial Ethernet switch designed to provide a high number of network connections in industrial automation systems. It combines 16 RJ45 ports supporting 10/100/1000 Mbit/s with eight SFP+ connections that can be used at 1000 Mbps and 10000 Mbps. This combination allows the switch to connect conventional industrial Ethernet equipment while also providing higher-speed SFP+ connections for network infrastructure and uplinks.

The Layer 3 managed design provides greater control over how industrial network traffic is organized and connected. With 24 integrated connections, the switch can serve as a central network component where multiple controllers, automation devices, and network segments need to communicate. The mix of copper and SFP+ interfaces also gives system designers flexibility when different connection speeds or interface types are required.

For industrial installations where reliability is important, the XC416-8 supports a redundant voltage supply connection. It operates from a 24 V DC supply with a 19.2 to 28.8 V range and provides two power supply connections. The fanless design avoids the need for internal cooling fans, which is useful for control cabinets where continuous operation and reduced mechanical components are desirable.

The switch is also designed for flexible installation. Its compact 210 mm x 147 mm x 125 mm enclosure can be installed on a 35 mm DIN rail, wall mounted, or installed on S7-300 and S7-1500 mounting rails. The USB 2.0 Type B operator console connection with USB-to-serial adapter provides a local console interface, while the signaling contact provides an additional connection for monitoring.

With an operating temperature range of -40 to +60 °C and storage and transport temperatures of -40 to +85 °C, the SCALANCE XC416-8 is designed for demanding industrial environments. Its IP20 protection class, compact construction, 1.8 kg net weight, and fanless operation make it suitable for industrial control cabinets and automation network installations where a larger managed Ethernet switch is required.
