The SCALANCE XR524-8WG is a managed Industrial Ethernet switch built for networks that need both high-density copper connectivity and high-speed fiber connections. It provides 24 10/100/1000 Mbit/s RJ45 ports for connecting industrial devices, controllers, servers, and other Ethernet equipment, while its 8 SFP+ ports provide 10 Gbit/s connectivity for fast uplinks or fiber-based network connections.

The switch supports transfer rates of 10, 100, and 1000 Mbit/s on its RJ45 connections and up to 10 Gbit/s through the SFP+ interfaces. This combination allows it to serve as a central network device where many Gigabit endpoints need to communicate while higher-speed links are required between network sections. The operator console uses USB 2.0 Type B with a USB-to-serial adapter, and the switch also supports CLP removable storage.

Power flexibility is another important part of the design. The SCALANCE XR524-8WG supports both AC and DC supply options, with an IEC C14 connection for AC power and a 2-pole terminal block for DC power. It includes input fusing for both supply types, although the supplied specifications identify the voltage supply connections as non-redundant. This makes it suitable for installations where either AC or DC power is available.

The 19-inch rackmount design allows the switch to be installed in standard network cabinets while using only 1 modular height unit. Its metal enclosure, IP20 protection, and operating temperature range of 0 to 60 °C support use in controlled industrial and network infrastructure environments. The unit also supports installation at altitudes up to 3000 m and operation at 95% relative humidity at 25 °C without condensation.
